This interior renovation service covered all aspects, from design, cost estimation, management, contractors’ supervision, etc., including cabinetmaking by ASC.
Renovations took place in an industrial-style duplex apartment, where brick, steel and timber textures break with the typical conception of replicable flats made by developers and contractors in L.A. Respectfully continuing with materiality preexistence was key.
Generally, apartments have constrained possibilities in terms of where appliances can be re-located without leading to exaggerated costs. In fact, renovations done in the same building were more about finishings of the cabinets and counter than their positioning.
Fitting a washing machine was also part of the new type of more generous kitchen the client was looking for.
In this context, the project took several months, coming up with a layout with a bigger kitchen due to the fridge cabinet creation next to the staircase, a 2-material counter and the possibility to expand it.
An independent counter with a white reflective MDF structure, is ‘loose’ so it can be placed in the middle, as an island close to the fridge, shaping an ‘L’ with the main counter, or extending it.
A not yet built extension cabinet could be placed next to the main one to extend it as well.
To dialogue with the existent materiality, a steel ribbon is part of the cabinet design, avoiding a false thick stone fascia. Stainless steel is placed on the existent tiles, meaning that costs, time and pollution were reduced.
Local pinewood was used to build the counter structure and the doors. American pinewood was used to the island counter.
2026: New photographs below show the renovation now with a simpler kitchen hood, that contributes to the whole material atmosphere designed.
