Published, El Plan Published Article ASC (author)

Usina Festival, 2019.

This research was as simple as the type of space re-discovered.

Reading an Argentine masterpiece —well, a worldwide masterpiece of the literature of all times— by José Herandez, that was encouraged and certainly inspired by an Uruguayan great literature work by Antonio Lussich, an specific space, with ‘given name’, caught my attention.

El Plan (o Plano) and the Gaucho (el Gaucho / o Gaucho) have an interesting relation in terms of architecture.

At the times of the Rio de la Plata’s States consolidation and ‘independence’, where the grass fields were not split by farm fences, this space was selected by the Gaucho for certain activities, that are saved in the records of the abovementioned Argentine and Uruguayan works.

El Plan was -and still is- just a flat space, nothing more and nothing less that that.  Retrieving tho origins of a key space of our territorial context was one of the goals with this research.

The Gaucho inhabited el Plan performing several ‘tasks’ on it. He named it, reflecting intelligibility within the vast landscape. Yet of tremendously elemental condition, he added to it certain value due to evident advantages both territorial (context) and architectural (key as the step that precedes a building).
