Kolasin Parking Garage, Montenegro.
This project was worked up in partnership with Ignacio Olivera. Our approach to this difficult challenge —a narrow, stepy urban plot, plus a high number of parking lots— was somewhere in between a completely pragmatic parking garage and, in the other hand, moderated landscape operations, to comply with the mixed-use programs briefed and its civic presence.
A parking garage can be more than the first idea that comes to our mind. Specifically for Kolasin, it should act as a gateway for all, those who live in and those who visit the outstanding region.
What does it exactly mean that ‘it can be more’ is the question we try to answer.
On the other hand, the site offers challenges —and opportunities— since the most efficient garage layouts need a certain width the plot is too narrow to offer. Matching somehow these 2 departure points, we worked up ‘an efficient garage building’ to the possible extent, that can also be experienced as a ‘landscape infrastructure new place with parking lots’, aiming to adapt itself generously for the civic requirements.
In specific, the rooftop —pitched between 2 and 5%— acts as a buffer regarding rainwater and snow. On it, two simple but problem-solver mass timber pavilions welcome visitors. The long distance views, the outdoor and the indoor sensations, are calmly enabled within this simple geometry.
