SESC MOGI DAS CRUZES, SAO PAULO
This project was worked up in partnership with Py Arquitectos from Uruguay. In less than a month, we came up with a SESC proposal for an International Competition.
We searched for a different approach for this civic, sports, cultural -and much more- institution. Aware of other great Sesc examples, we still wanted to work up a building that would foster different sensations.
Taking advantage of what the Brief called a ‘Park-like Sesc’, around 400 existent valuable trees, we decided to split the protagonism of the building, giving to the gardens a major role.
More about Ses Mogi das Cruzes
After preserving all precious trees, move only 2 and remove the ones identified in the survey, new tall trees, shrubs and a huge quantity of herbs, composite an alive fabric. It is cut by pedestrian pathways composed of grass (1 meter) and a semi-permeable mortar (1.5 meters). This duo trails the entire site with straight lines, generating partial scenarios due to how the cross in triangles, how they find the minimalistic facades of the ‘building’ and the landscaping units.
Indeed, the idea was to offer only 3 façade expression, each one associated with one of the 3 different landscaping units.
The building itself adopts a rational design to compensate high-end facade systems from an economic perspective. A less constrained volume with H shape in plant, is the line that connects the wings. With the interiors in local massive timber, it aims to welcome and accompany all visitors in a human scale environment.
